We’re Officially Leaping Bunny Certified!
by Emily Gaynor
At Milk Makeup, we believe in good ingredients + epic payoff. Something else we believe in? Puppies. We have an office dog named Buddy who spreads licks ’n’ love as he makes his way through Milk Makeup HQ. Because we love Buddy, and our planet, we promise to always be cruelty-free, paraben-free, and 100% vegan. That means using sustainably sourced ingredients whenever possible and never testing on animals or formulating with animal-derived products or byproducts. It also means being transparent with our Fam. As we grow, we’re taking steps to be more environmentally-conscious every day, especially as more clean-focused ingredients and technologies are developed. Our latest earth-friendly move? We’re psyched to share that we are officially Leaping Bunny certified. Leaping Bunny is the gold standard for cruelty-free certifications and we will proudly wear our bunny logo for our Fam, but also, of course, for Buddy the dog. We talked to Kim Paschen, program manager at Leaping Bunny, to explain what this certification means for you:
Milk Makeup: What is the Leaping Bunny Certification?
Kim Paschen: Leaping Bunny certifies companies to be free of animal testing at all stages of product development, from ingredients to formulations to finished products.
MMU: What are the standards that a brand must meet in order to get the certification?
KP: In order to become Leaping Bunny certified, a company must submit documentation that demonstrates their entire supply chain is free of animal testing as well as their finished products. They must choose a fixed cut-off date after which no new animal testing can occur. They also must promise to recommit to the Leaping Bunny Program annually and be open to a third party audit of their supply chain management.
MMU: What does a Leaping Bunny certification mean for the customer? What does this tell them about a product or brand?
KP: A shopper can be assured that when they purchase products from a Leaping Bunny certified company, they are purchasing something that is verified to be free of animal testing at all stages of product development. They can also be assured that the brands on Leaping Bunny’s list have all had to renew their commitment to the program within the last 12 months in order to remain certified.
MMU: Have you seen a major increase in brands that are interested in getting the Leaping Bunny Certification?
KP: Absolutely. When I started working with the Leaping Bunny Program in 2010, we have less than 300 companies on our list. We now have over 1,400!
MMU: Why do you think consumers are asking for this?
KP: Consumers know that animal tests on cosmetics are outdated and unnecessary. There are plenty of amazing products on the market which are not animal-tested that are completely safe and work as they are supposed to. This influx of cruelty-free products into the marketplace has raised the bar for everyone involved.
MMU: What do you think the future of vegan beauty looks like?
KP: Never better! More and more suppliers and manufacturers are doing away with animal testing while at the same time inventing new formulations that do amazing things. Furthermore, the world of alternative test methods continues to expand and improve so that these testing methods are becoming the rule instead of the exception.
