How Super Successful People Start Their Days

by Kiran Gill

There’s no denying it. How you start your morning sets the tone for the rest of your day. If you hit the snooze button more than once or skip breakfast, you’re guaranteed to feel the affects all day long. Since the New Year is the time to reset, re-evaluate, and refocus, we reached out to some serious boss babes who are making waves in their industries to learn just how they tackle their mornings to optimize productivity in 2018.

CYNDI RAMIREZ, FOUNDER OF CHILLHOUSE AND TASTE THE STYLE

Are you a morning person or a night owl?
Night owl for life!

What time do you wake up?
8 AM.

What’s your favorite way to start the day?
With some “Give Me Life” (the energizing adaptogen blend by Chillhouse) in my cup and a nice hot shower. That, and I’m trying to stretch in the AM a lot more these days.

Can you walk us through your morning routine?
I wake up, check my phone, and go through all the social platforms. Then, I make my blend, shower, and start my skincare routine. I try on a ton of outfit options before I run out of the apartment and head to our office in LES.

What is your breakfast go-to?
I’m kind of bad about breakfast, but if I have the time I will pick up the egg white bites at Starbucks. (They’re addicting and kind of healthy. So, please excuse my basicness, but…#sorrynotsorry.)

Do you have any beauty products/regimens you always start your morning with?
I wash my face with a soy cleanser, followed by an energizing moisturizer, a youth preserving serum, and then I follow up with my makeup routine and a setting mist.

What would you like to add to your AM routine in 2018?
A quick workout every morning! MAKING IT A PRIORITY, PEOPLE. I SWEAR.

Are you a morning person or a night owl?
Neither, I find that I have the most energy early evening! In the mornings and evenings, I’m super tired.

What time do you wake up?
8 AM.

What’s your favorite way to start the day?
Snuggles with my dog Tim Tam!

Can you walk us through your morning routine?
I will wake up and then ask my boyfriend to wake me up in 10 more minutes. I then proceed to snuggle with my dog in bed, brush my teeth, put on makeup, get dressed, drink coffee, and work.

What is your breakfast go-to?
Coffee with almond or oat milk. Breakfast is pretty random; sometimes I don’t eat until 11 AM or noon. Sometimes, I’ll have a full breakfast if it’s a weekend. I love going to Dimes Deli and getting the breakfast burrito, but in a bowl and with a side of bacon.

Do you have any beauty products/regimens you always start your morning with?
Elta moisturizer with sunscreen! I also drink apple cider vinegar with warm water and I take a probiotic.

What would you like to add to your AM routine in 2018?
I want to wake up earlier, so I don’t feel so rushed every morning!

PHOEBE LOVATT, FOUNDER OF THE WW CLUB AND AUTHOR OF THE WORKING WOMAN’S HANDBOOK

Are you a morning person or a night owl?
I’m a morning person who frequently likes to dance ’til 3 AM.

What time do you wake up?
I aim for 7 AM. Aim, being the operative word.

What’s your favorite way to start the day?
In close proximity to the ocean, or someone I love.

Can you walk us through your morning routine?
The first thing I do is tongue-scrape (an Ayurvedic practice to remove bacteria from the mouth), brush my teeth, and drink some warm water. Then I do 10 to 15 minutes of mediation, if I’m being diligent. Followed by some coffee with almond milk, while I review my to-do list or sometimes I just write whatever shit is in my head down on paper. After that, I either start work straight away or exercise, depending on deadlines and energy levels.

What is your breakfast go-to?
Sometimes it is a handful of nuts and fruit. Usually, it’s a green protein smoothie in the summer, or eggs in the winter.

Do you have any beauty products/regimens you always start your morning with?
I’ll usually spritz with rosewater rather than wash my face! Then I will apply the Drunk Elephant Vit C Serum, plus a moisturizer (currently Dr. Jart because my skin is dry!) and then Elta sunscreen.

What would you like to add to your AM routine in 2018?
I want more consistency with the meditation. It works!

KRISSY JONES, SKY TING YOGA CO-FOUNDER

Are you a morning person or a night owl?
I am a morning person, unless there’s a dance party the night before.

What time do you wake up?
7 AM.

What’s your favorite way to start the day?
If I lived in a perfect world, I would start every morning with a plunge in the ocean! But, since I live in NYC, my favorite way is to start is with lemon water. 🙂

Can you walk us through your morning routine?
I like to lie in bed for a while reflecting on my dreams. Then, I usually turn on a podcast as I make myself lemon water, coffee, or some sort of hot tincture. I brush my teeth, splash water on my face, dry brush my skin, then slather oil all over myself before I get dressed. And, hopefully I still have time to head out the door to a morning yoga class at Sky Ting before work!

What is your breakfast go-to?
I love to make bulletproof coffee in the morning. It’s basically coffee with coconut butter, MCT oil, and sometimes I add a little bit of collagen. After yoga, I eat a real breakfast that’s usually avocado toast, or an açai bowl.

Do you have any beauty products/regimens you always start your morning with?
I love dry brushing my skin! It helps with circulation and stimulating your lymphatic system. I am also a fan of oil pulling when I have the time. My skin is dry, so I always put oil on my body, face, and even my hair. And, if I’m really on my game I use collagen and reishi mushrooms in my smoothie or coffee.

What would you like to add to your AM routine in 2018?
Meditation! Which has been on my New Year’s list for the past 5 years. I meditate at night but would love to incorporate it in the morning as well to prime my brain for the day.

Are you a morning person or a night owl?
I’m a night owl. I go out a lot and I can’t stand waking up to alarms, but I’m usually pretty chipper in the morning, regardless.

What time do you wake up?
It depends on what is going on in my life. But, I seem to have an internal clock that tends to always wake me up before I’m ready.

What’s your favorite way to start the day?
I like to put music on and clean before I leave…. That always seems to make me feel nice when I get back home.

Can you walk us through your morning routine?
My schedule is really inconsistent, but on a good day I have coffee, clean a little, get ready (change my outfit one too many times) and then head to my office.

What is your breakfast go-to?
Lunch! Since I never remember to eat breakfast.

Do you have any beauty products/regimens you always start your morning with?
So many! I use Dermalogica Microfoliant, Sunday Riley Ceramic Slip face wash, Dr. Jart+ Cicapair cream and serum, Fenty foundation mixed with Glossier moisturizer, and then I use tons of Milk Makeup products. I love the Grrrrl Lipstick, the big Lip + Cheek blush stick, the Highlighter Stick, and the Eye Vinyl.

What would you like to add to your AM routine in 2018?
If I could be faster getting ready, it would be really helpful. But, as I mentioned, I get caught up getting dressed pretty easily. I’d also really like to make my bed everyday!

Are you a morning person or a night owl?
I am a morning bird all the way. I love the morning!

What time do you wake up?
I usually wake up around 7 AM.

What’s your favorite way to start the day?
The very first thing I do every morning is meditate. It brings me balance and positive energy, which sets the tone for the day ahead.

Can you walk us through your morning routine?
I like my mornings to be zen and quiet. It’s a time I clear for myself to practice self-care. I wake up around 7 AM and will meditate for 20 minutes. I go to my morning yoga class and on my walk I stop into the Butcher’s Daughter to get a Liquid Vitality Shot, which is ginger, honey, yuzu, and Echinacea. If you’re in New York, you must try it. I swear by it to keep a healthy immune system and it is a magic cure at the first signs of a cold. After yoga, I will always get a coconut milk latte and then head back to my den to start the day.

What is your breakfast go-to?
Coconut milk latte. And I also love eggs in the morning, a scramble with a market vegetable and always avocado.

Do you have any beauty products/regimens you always start your morning with?
I take a Probiotic Supreme every morning and a teaspoon of Nitric Balance. I also wash my face with a citrus herbal cleanser and then follow that with the Daily Serum by Joanna Vargas. I love the alien green color and texture of the serum. It also gives my skin a glow!

What would you like to add to your AM routine in 2018?
I want to add drinking hot water with lemon after I meditate and a morning mask.

Are you a morning person or a night owl?
I am a morning person.

What time do you wake up?
5 AM.

What’s your favorite way to start the day?
Slowly and of my own accord, not by my husband, child, or work.

Can you walk us through your morning routine?
I wake up and head to the kitchen for hot water and lemon. I then make myself a superfood coffee with almond milk, cinnamon, sun potion yin powder, cocoa powder, and coconut oil. I’ll then head back to bed to check my emails and catch up with friends and family from Europe.

What is your breakfast go-to?
Eggs…always!

Do you have any beauty products/regimens you always start your morning with?
I wash my face with SkinByVarley balm cleanser and then pile on the Vintner’s Daughter serum.

What would you like to add to your AM routine in 2018?
Meditation…I’m going to take 5 minutes to meditate each day.

DARBY JACKSON, FOUNDER OF APRÈS

Are you a morning person or a night owl?
I love mornings. I am by far the most creative and productive first thing in the morning. It’s probably because I grew up swimming and playing water polo and we were always in the pool by 5:30 AM. So, early morning wake up calls are in my blood.

What time do you wake up?
On the weekdays, I’m up by 5:30 AM, but I go to bed early, so my body is pretty ready to wake up at that point. I’m also not a big snoozer either. When my alarm goes off, I’m up and out of bed right away.

What’s your favorite way to start the day?
I love to start my day with a good workout, especially when I can do it with a friend. I get to sweat and socialize all in one! My workouts are almost always classes. I love to mix things up so right now I’m bouncing around between HIIT, barre, and spin.

Can you walk us through your morning routine?
I always start off with warm water with lemon and trace minerals. Then, I take my daily supplements, which include B12, turmeric, chlorella and Vitamin D. This little routine really helps bring my body back into balance in the morning.

After that, I brew up some coffee and add lion’s mane mushrooms to it. Sounds super weird, I know, but hear me out. Lion’s mane is a nootropic, which means it enhances cognitive function and overall learning potential. It is so perfect for this crazy startup life I’m living right now! After coffee, I spend about 10 to 15 minutes quietly visualizing how I want my day to go. It’s a little bit like meditation mixed with some intention setting. After that, I normally head to my workout, but I never like to rush out the door. It’s really important to me to take my time in the morning. I believe that starting your morning rushed just translates into a sloppy, rushed day. So, I always give myself about an hour to go through my whole morning routine before I’m out the door to my workout.

What is your breakfast go-to?
I like to workout on an empty stomach, so I’m always pretty ravenous right after my workouts. I follow my workouts with an Après because at that point my body is screaming for some nutrition. The combination of protein, healthy fats, and hydration keep me full for a couple of hours. Then, when I’m hungry again, I’ll have some gluten free steel cut oats with chia seeds, berries, and almond butter.

Do you have any beauty products/regimens you always start your morning with?
I definitely see my lemon water, trace minerals, and supplements as a key part of my overall beauty routine. Lemon water is packed with vitamin C which is fantastic for keeping your skin looking young and fresh. Plus, turmeric is an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant powerhouse, AKA your skin’s best friend.

On top of that, I always apply a facial oil called Paradon, my friend’s company, when I wake up. I love how it makes my face look and feel, plus it smells amazing. If I’m particularly tired looking in the morning, I’ll put on some Honest hazel eye patches while I make my coffee and get dressed. Outside of that, I keep it pretty simple. I truly believe that beauty starts from the inside with what you eat, how well you sleep, and how you manage your stress.

What would you like to add to your AM routine in 2018?
I’d love to be able to spend more time meditating and setting my intentions in the morning. Right now I only really spend 5 to 10 minutes doing that and to be honest, I’ve been skipping more days than I’d like. Spending even just 5 minutes in silence, visualizing my day makes such a difference in my overall anxiety and productivity. My intention in 2018 is to carve out more time for that in my morning.

GABRIELA LAWRENCE, FOUNDER OF PUSHINGSIX

Are you a morning person or a night owl?
Definitely a morning person, it’s when I have the most energy.

What time do you wake up?
During the week, usually between 6:30 AM and 7:30 AM. The weekends are my time to relax, so I’ll sleep in a bit until about 8:30 AM and 9 AM.

What’s your favorite way to start the day?
Exercising! Working out in the morning leaves me feeling accomplished first thing in the AM, and gives me the energy and motivation to go on with the rest of my day.

Can you walk us through your morning routine?
As soon as I wakeup, I’ll check my email, the news, and social channels to see what’s going on in the world. Depending on the weather or how lazy I feel that morning, I’ll then hit the gym, go on a run, do some at-home yoga, or take a boxing class at Shadowbox.

What is your breakfast go-to?
First is coffee, of course! Then, it’s eggs of any kind, usually with sautéed veggies or homemade avocado toast.

Do you have any beauty products/regimens you always start your morning with?
My beauty routine is pretty simple. I’m using an array of products from Urban Decay at the moment which consists of their priming spray, a tinted moisturizer, concealer, and setting spray that make it super easy to get ready. Then I’ll spritz a little Coco by Chanel and it’s off to the races!

What would you like to add to your AM routine in 2018?
I’d love to get into journaling. I love the idea of a little self-reflection and setting your daily intentions at the beginning of each day.
